View Full Version : 12 Hours to Get our computer fixed!!!!

OK, we had stale antivirus protection on our computer. We bought Norton Antivirus 2008 and I installed it. After 12 hours on dealing with online chat support along with phone support (talked and chatted with 8 people), they missed that we had an old firewall program installed preventing us from registering the product or doing virus definition file updates. They even did remote access to look at our computer.
I stand behind Symantec (Norton) products (this is what the military uses and I had great experiences at the corporate level with them), but this is yet another example of how companys are so poorly equipped in the customer service area.
It just SUCKS to spend 12 hours of a Saturday that could have been spent wheeling dealing with this! Plus, it would be nice to talk to someone where you can understand each other without a language barrier! I am robbed of a full day of family time, time to fish, hunt, work on the Jeeps...regardless...it WAS MY time!!!!!
All is fixed and working now and we are once again secure.
OK, enough venting. I am finally going to bed! I wish I could charge them $20 an hour for my time!!!! Then again, they spent like $400 helping me for a $40 product. Isn't there something wrong there? Comment as you want...I am sure I am not alone ;)

I can't stand Norton. Especially the full package. If and when you decide to remove Norton or install another version of Norton it's almost impossible to get rid of it all. It spreads junk all through the registry. I've gone as far as reformatting to get rid of Norton. Norton is a resource hog to the 5th power. It eats up so much resource with all the back ground unseen crap running that unless you have a very nicely built PC it will slow the piss out of your machine.
2years I've been using PC Cillin{the full security package} and I have yet to recieve one single virus, it warns of spyware sites way better than Norton ever did. Does a lot of stuff way better than Norton ever did. It cost per year but one subscription can be installed on 3 PC's on one network. If you get a new PC it's no big deal to install one of the three onto a new PC. Just let them know what your doing.
Only good thing Norton has IMo is Norton Ghost, that is one handy program that you can have installed w/o installing any other Norton junk.
Boooooooo Norton!!!!!

I run corporate Norton and don't have any problems, but then again, I am not a real computer savvy person. My former company provided it free to all employees, with ongoing updates. I also use SpyBot and Ad-Aware. No specific firewall software, either.
My wife runs Norton, but a subscription version, and her computer, which is newer than mine, is slower booting up and shutting down.
My rant would be the crappy customer service, talking to some foreign yahoo who can hardly speak english. That crap is only going to get worse.

It's not just in the public area's, many large company's own employee tech support goes overseas.
The outsourcing of America...
I'm thankful I know a thing or two 'bout pc's, *(it's my daily job) I have only had to call tech support on my DSL when Sprint knocked me out of service when I upgraded speeds.

All I know is it is a good thing that he handled the majority of it.
lol, I called the help number while he was online with the "yahoos".
It was supposed to cost $9.99. Now, they GIVE you are free number, but
that, of course, was disconnected. When I called, the first time, I politely
informed her that I was NOT going to pay for this call. After 8 hours and a
number that doesn't work, I felt that it was unfair to charge me. She told
me that she agreed and would call me back. HA!! 1 hour later she hadn't
called and now I was very mad. So I called again. The first thing I said
was, "Please understand I'm not upset with you because I don't think you are
one of the 5 people my husband or I have spoken to...... That said......."
Lol, I was FAR FROM NICE!! I was a woman in true fashion at that point. lmao (if you get my drift)

AVG all the way
I use to run Nortons... no more. I run the full McAfee Clinic, plus Spyhunter, and Spydoctor. Spyhunter is the better than Spydoctor, but they will sometimes hit on something that the other doesn't hit on.

I also use AVG, although I could get Norton for free through the military, I also use Spybot Search and Destroy. I have used Norton and Mcaffey (sp?) in the past both seemed to eat up resources, AVG is almost invisible, except when it is running scans. I schedule the scans for when I am typically away from the computer or when I am asleep.

Norton = resource pig, esp the Internet Security Suite. I uninstalled it and used Zonelabs, as it only took 9 MB of RAM to run. They switched AV engines and it became a pig too.
I run NAV Corporate at work and it is MUCH less intensive in the RAM dept than the consumer version. I loaded it on Dani's school machine, and VERY tempted to load it on my home machine, but I still need a new firewall software. PC Cillin may be a way to go.
Mike you got a link to them?

Norton Corporate Edition is actually quite good. But sadly My university only provides McAfee... and we all know McAfee Can't find anything anyway, lol Well that's just my experience with their Virus Protection software. I have had to remove Windows viruses manually that McAfee didn't find.
I don't use either of them for my computer.

Wow, that is impressive. I've just relied on my version of Mcafee since I know Norton is a pita.
How intrusive is TrendMicro when you just want to turn it off to play a memory/cpu intensive game, etc?
Thx.
Bill
