Hey guys check this out. Landon said the lake looked a little low over the weekend. They did not start the water level until Monday.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the dam NORTH or up river from Turkey Bay?

You're thinking of Barkley Dam on the Cumberland River, I guess, Don, which IS north (downriver) from Turkey Bay and on the opposite side of the peninsula. That lake that you cross before getting into LBL is Barkley Lake, which is an impoundment on the Cumberland River.

Cumberland Dam is way upstream from Turkey Bay, and if they let some extra water out at that dam, the river level below it would rise. Not sure if there would be much effect as far downstream as Lake Barkely.

From what I have read, if Wolf Creek Dam breaks lose everyone all the way down to Nashville will be hurting.

Wonder if it would make it to Huntsville.

BTW, dike is the correct spelling for his usage. The spelling with the y is the version that y'all are thinking of that is putting ya in the gutter. :)

The Corp of Engineers began lowering the lake behind the Wolf Creek dam yesterday. The lake is being lowered only 11 feet now, but will be dropped further once the water system intakes upstream are lowered.

With this release of water through Wolf Creek Dam, the water quality in the Cumberland River and Lake Barkley should expect changes including decreased dissolved oxygen, higher temperatures and increased algae particularly this summer. This will have an adverse affect on the critters in the water, and most likely Smallmouth Bass which do not tolerate warmer temperatures very well.

This lowering of the water level upstream of the Wolf Creek Dam is being done to prepare it for major renovations/repairs which is expected to take about 7 years to complete.

All of the cities downstream of the dam have been in communications with the Corps, FEMA and various other agencies. The Corps has developed a projected flood map to show how high the water will get if a catastrophic failure occurs (you might have some lakefront property and not even know it.)

All joking aside, this is potentially a very serious situation. Let's hope that the rainy season this spring is not of biblical proportions - or we'll need to gather the animals 2 x 2.

We had a dam repaired up here in IN about 7yrs ago by the Corps. Everything went just fine. Nobody flooded out only poor fishing and boating for about 5yrs. There were a few crazy people that took their 4X4's out in the mud after they drained the water down and got stuck.

Should I go ahead and put a snorkle on the Jeep since I live downstream?
Any body interested in "future" lakefront property?

There was a big tadoo about this dam last year. Rumors were that they were going to have to drop it so low that all the marinas were going to be dry for tow or three years while they were fixing it. They have always had seepage and erosion problems with the Wolf Creek.

The Corps had a big meeting to mullify the excited people and said they weren't going to need to do anything that will affect the recreational uses of the lake. Looks like it's a bigger problem than they admitted to.

Do I see an opportunity for some off road territory opening up here.

You might want to check with DNR first and remember it's been under water a long time. Ours stayed muddy a long time. It mostly just got crusty on top with mud(deep) underneith.
