Ferrell, I beat ya!!! :D :p :D

My 8.8 swap is done. I have a minor leak in the T fitting for the new brake lines I ran, but other than this, all seems to be working GREAT. NO VIBES!! Boy do I like the feel of that 8.8 with a locker..... and yes the first few times the locker snapped, I jumped out of my seat :D I'll upload a video of my test run (no wheels, Jeep on blocks).

here is a photo of engine running and wheels turning. I did this per instructions for 20 minutes before I put tires on an went for a test drive. While sitting on blocks running, I checked for hot spots, or noises that shouldn't be there. None to report. :D

I have a video of this that I will upload to my gallery if this site will allow.

All I can see is this: http://www.itsajeep.org/vBulletin/gallery/images/file_mpg.gif

You have to replace the [ url ] [ url ] with something like [ img] [ img ], like you do to link pictures... I think.

I just went to the gallery and clicked it, it works from there. And that was 20 seconds of my life I'll never get back. :p I thought you had some video of it going down the road. I get the feeling you may be just a teensy bit excited. :D

You did the install yourself. There's the difference, you paid attention to detail versus what a shop won't do.

I beat both of ya by a MILE on my 8.8 install. did it myself, along with a lift kit install, SYE, and a front axle swap, all in one weekend from start to finish. with a little help from james.

:p

glad ya finally got it finished DOn. Its a great feeling ain't it!

Guy that built the 8.8 for me was telling me how to break the axle/locker in for the first 2,000 miles. I told him it would take me almost a year to put 2,000 miles on my Jeep :D Actually, it would take much longer as he didn't want me to wheel my Jeep durring this break in period. Hmmmmmm, wheel-n is about the only time I drive my Jeep.

Wow! it took me three full weekends to do all that. One weekend for Dana 30 swap, one weekend for SYE and Tera 2wd low, and one weekend for the 8.8 swap.

lets just say I was motivated. It was in James' shop, and the only way I could get home was to finish the jeep. LOL

plus out of the hot sun and all the diet sprite I could drink. (that seemed to be the drink of choice at James' house at the time.)

Don, time to Daily Drive it for a while. :) With the proper gearing and speedo, daily driving it shouldn't be a problem.

daily driving it for a few months may be....dare I say.....pleasurable now with 4.56 gears and an SYE and all the other fancy stuff.

Not only a good chance to break in the axle and allow the gears to mesh, but a good oppertunity to get a few mile on it and work out any quirks that WILL come up!!!

True that,

Good job Don.

Ps-what was up with your DS?

Ferrell, I drove the Little Jeep to work today. It really drives NICE :D Man, other than the occassional snap from the locker (which I almost don't even notice now), my Jeep drives like a car. However, it feels like it is super glued to the pavement.... the traction seems to be that good. It is still early (only 15 miles total since build), but so far I am real pleased with the preformance and handling of my Jeep. When you get your's done correctly, you will be real pleased with it. It's like having a NEW Jeep :D

The pinion is about 1 to 1.5 inches towards driver's side (normal for an 8.8, I am told). However, when you closely inspect the tires as they sit to body, driver's side seems to be out .25 inch or less more that passenger, maybe not, I did this by eyeball. Did I tell you NO VIBES and it drives like a car :D Driving this sucker on slick roads and/or black ice could be exciting, but I think it is going to be more of a need to re-learn how to drive, than anything. Ferrell, Get your Heep fixed so we can go WHEEL-N!!!!

Don

Wish I had an extra $10,000 to dump into my jeep to do 4.56's, 8.8, lockers, new skids, new radiator, SYE, DS, Heck Don, you should have done a Hemi Swap while you were in there!!!!! LOL

Hmmm, Hemi swap..... I like the idea (evil grin)

I didn't put anything near this amount in my Junk. However, I do have more $$ in Mods than I paid for the Jeep 2.5 years ago. This is with me doing the labor. Tony would have to sell his house and live in a box if he had to pay labor for all of his mods. I didn't do as many mods as Tony, but if I had to pay $65.00 an hour or more, for labor, it would eat me out of my house.

We could not get that sucker to expand.. we pulled and pulled and only got tired. Finally, I sat down on a step, put one end of DS between my feet and pulled the other end so hard, I thought I hurt myself, literally.
Once I got it to move slightly, it could be pulled out more with less effort.

The only difference that you have is you dont have the front locker that I did. But then you did the 2 wheel low kit that I didn't do. I am going to get my front ds rebuilt and see if that fixes my front vibes so I can reconnect my front ds. I hope that fixes it.

Did you do a SYE? A SYE would only help with Vibes from rear DS, not front, so it shouldn't be an issue for you. I am just wondering if you did a SYE or not.

Ferrell's Jeep
05-09-2006, 09:46 AM
Yeah I did the SYE. I have absolutly no vibes in the back. It just upfront. Will rebuilding and balancing the front ds fix my front vibes? When they disconnected the front was silent and perfect. So I know it was all the DS.

I agree with front versus rear vibes. I wasn't questioning that. I was just wondering if you got away without having to do the SYE.

Nope I did the sye and everything is great. Runs smooth. Now I just want to get my front ds fixed so I can connect it. I will tell them to rebulid it or I might just take it off and have it rebuilt myself. (i wont do the work I will take it to one of those shops you posted for me).

Why have your ds rebuilt for the same money you could buy a new (better than OEM) one?

A YJ ds may be more expensive than a CJ, but a CJ premium drive shaft from Tom Woods ready to install was 220 shipped.

Ferrel dave';s ds is a much better shop, btw

Don

Your ds had the same problem as mine. IT can get sticky sometimes because the grease builds up and sometimes creats a vacume making it hard to move in and out. Its good for when its on the jeep, keeps everything lubed.

I called both today. Dave is a character of his own. And the other one is pretty nice. Seems to know his stuff over the phone. Dont know what I am going to do yet. If it ends up being cheaper to just get a ds from tom woods thats what I will end up doing.

ferrel, sell your front ds to david, then go out and buy a Tom woods one. David could use a front ds as a rear ds when he does his SYE.

kevin

*or give it to me,for the $$ you owe me for cutting your yard, i could use a spare.

Bill, I have never done anything like what you are going to have to do to make them 1 tons work. However, I wouldn't mind helping ya, if you would move about 250 miles closer to me :D I am loving my Jeep. It was worth all the work & $$$$. Now get busy on your Jeep so we can go WHEEL-N!!!
