Been looking for a CJ or YJ and came upon a few. Most are rust buckets but found this one local. http://clarksville.craigslist.org/cto/2530370806.html

It has a few rust spots, nothing that can't be repaired then bedlined. It has a 4cy 1 Barrel Carb, and a 4 speed tranny. He said due to the tires the speedo is about 8 miles off and it drove smooth. My biggest concern is the tranny shifter has significant play in it. What would cause a large ammount of play in the shifter? It shifts OK. My only other dislike is it has manuel brakes. Comes with hard top and hard doors. He has it listed $2500 but I was going to counter offer $1750.

Whats the majority call? Worth my time and $? And what could be the issue with the tranny shifter?

If it shifts OK, I wouldn't worry about the shifter. I would not offer him more than $1500. That's a good starting point. It is a 4-banger and I don't think it has as much demand. Personally, an '85 4 banger sounds ify, if I couldn't get it cheap I would wait for a 6 cyl. If you really like it, try to get it cheap. Be sure to check the oil pressure and any rust in the frame. You don't want to repair a frame. Put it in fourth gear and see if the clutch slips or if it will hold enuf to kill the engine.

I like my 4 banger. Looked at a new JK but I don't want to wait for it to burn all the crap off itself so I like the looks.lol

I don't think the guy will take $1500. I am still unsure.

Me, I will never buy another 4cyl jeep unless I plan on replacing it with a V8.

I think you will find the 4cylinder to be under powered and a major disappointment. Either walk away, or plan on a driveline swap. The Indiana Heep would be less work than messing with a 4 banger. Just say-n.

I have been on the trail with several 4-cyl and I was really didn't think it was anything to be ashamed of. They had no trouble keeping up except where lockers were needed and they didn't have any. It depends on what you are wanting to do and what options you want. If you want to build a monster, don't get a 4-cyl.

I've been looking at many ads and the 4-cyls are all over the place. Either there were a lot of them built or they aren't selling. If you look long enuf you will find a nice 6-cyl. My CJ-5 had a 4.2 and once I got the hang of adjusting the carb, it was a real bear. Many people thought I had a 8 in it.

Just don't rush at what is available now if it isn't what you want. I've seen CJ's sell cheap because not many people want then anymore. However, there is not that much of a price difference between a CJ-7 in good shape and a '97 TJ.

The real disadvantage 4-cyl. owners have related to me is that they have to run at max. rpm on the highway.

I am wanting a streetable driver and every now and again wheeler. I am not afraid of the 4cy, but rather the Carb. Off road at all carbs suck, now look at where I will primarily wheel, Turkey Bay, hills EVERYWHERE

OK, here is what I discovered about the carbs, at least on my CJ. Everybody says the carbs run out of gas or flood out on a hill. Standard float levels make the carb go dry and run out of gas. I set my float a little lower.
Then when you get a angle the float keeps plenty of fuel in the bowl and the engine maintains the power. I never had a hill problem after I started doing that. Even when I had to sit on the side of a hill and winch Don all day long.

Same $$, but looks to be much better condition than the CJ7 in Indiana.
Clutch replacement shouldn't be that big of a deal. Just wonder why they cheaped out and didn't do it when the motor was out?

How's the search going?

I'm glad to see people are wanting to build cj's too.
