my unlimited rubi has a 3" lift w/ 33's .While at toys by troy he stated i should get it regeared .Is he just trying to sell me stuff or should i regear .swaping out the gears was 1.200 buxs .My thoughts were over 33's gear swap , your thoughts ?

You're at 3.73 now right? Auto? (most common on a UL). Hmmmm, did you feel a major power loss when you went to 33"s?

INDY nope its the 6 speed .And i drove the jeep very briefly before the lift and tires so i do not remember what it was like before .I feel a major power loss driving the jeep in comparasion to my other vehicles . motors range from 455 olds ,429 intercetor , hi po 289 ,383 stroker .I would say if i want power,i can jump in another one of my rides .I just do not think it will make a huge differance swapping out gears at this point as i went from a 31- 33 " tire keeping the stock 16" rubi wheels .or am i wrong ? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Rubi has 4.11 gears. So going to a 33 will not be bad at all. That is on the "better gas mileage" side of the chart. 4.56 would be a good middle area and 4.88's would be for better crawl speeds. But with the 4:1 transfer case you should be ok with the 4.11's that are in it. If you go to 35's then you will feel the power lose then.

1200 bucks you gotta be ****tin me. Thats how much a shop charges??? 4.11's, 4 to 1 case ,fuel injected 4.0L and 33's. that sounds like a great combo. I guess you already said that huh Bill. I guess great minds think alike.

my pleasure AZ. It is $1200 here at my local shop but that includes all the parts. Labor was just $275. You should be good for now.

TbT stuff is pricey, esp their bumpers! But they are REAL nice and they protect quite well. Almost bought em myself, but I figured I'd save some cash. I ended up with nice bumpers at a considerably lower price. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'v got a rubi with a 4" lift and 33" I didn't regear and have driven it from indiana to las vegas through colorado. Now there is a noticable loss of power but not that much. I notice it because my wife has a stock(not for long) rubi. and I can tell the difference when I drive hers. Also with 33's and stock gears your spedometer reads correct now. they are all off from the factory. If you live in mountains or travel alot on highway with hills and use the cruise controll with a manual transmission you will notice it.

The good news is in 4th gear on the highway you will get close to the same mileage as a stock rubi in 5th. And you'll get much better mileage doing 80 over a stock rubi.

I'd say drive it and get gears if YOU think you need them.

You just have to get used to the quirks at high speeds /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

When we go to TB we often run over 80mph down the parkway in KY. Last time robin even hit the 92mph limiter since she is running stock tires with the speedo error.

I don't think there is a pressing need to regear a Rubi with 33" tires unless you have a manual and you are a rock crawler. I don't think highway performance should be an issue.

I still have the 31" tires and I seldom use first gear in low range. In really bad stuff I do use it, though, and I'd hate to see it go away. I could use the extra clearance from a lift and tires, but I've decided I won't do it unless I can afford the gears too.
