View Full Version : Trans seal
I noticed I have fluid leaking out from where the tranny and transfer bolt together. Is there a press in type seal where the shaft comes out the rear of the transmission. Is it as simple as pulling out the transfer, pry the old out and tap the new in?Are there any special tools needed?
theres also a small possible leak from the transfer front output. Is this an easy one to fix.I'm thinking about replacing all seals.Roughly what cost am I looking at for parts for trans, transfer input and both output, and front/rear diff inputs?

Hi,
The wifes 98 grand cherokee recently started dripping between the tranny and t-case. I got the parts and the first day I had some time put it up on the lift and had them changed out in a few hours. Pulled the rear drive shaft, put the transmission jack under the t-case slid it back and pulled it out. Both seals were just the regular tap in oil seals. One came out real easy because the shaft stayed on the other side, that meant you could just take a seal puller and pop it right out. The other side still had the shaft in the center so if I remember right I think I used one of those little slide hammer screw in dent pullers, just screwed it through the seal and it popped right out too. I changed them both since I wasn't sure which one was leaking. An amusing story kind of goes along with the story. My wife still has the dealer change the oil and they brought it to her attention. They told her that on a scale of 1 to 10 it was a 7, I said I don't see any oil under it where she parks and they said it was pooling up on the skid plate. They wanted way to much money to fix it so I told her I would do it. When I first looked under it I discovered it doesn't have a skid plate! Did have a drip hanging on the bottom of the joint though. To there credit it did look kind of look washed clean though. Still never saw a puddle under it though.
