I am wanting to get a GPS for christmas and was wonderin what everyone was using. This will be used mainly offroad in the jeep but i would also like to be able to use it on the highway for trips and things. I have been looking at the garmin 60 series. Any thoughts, suggestions?
I like Garmins..... there is some neat stuff out there, like GPS that will store both street and topo maps. Look for large screen size, the larger, the better. External antenna is nice when you are in the woods... wish mine had that availabilty. I purchased the software and have it loaded on my laptop... this way I can save my tracks and store them for later use.

I love my Garmin Nuvi 550. It has Topo and it is fascinating to use off road. Highly recommend. However, I have not used any other so look around. There may be newer or better units.

ditto
Also it has a very good antenna built in, that has picked up the signal in the middle of the summer, in all the woods i have been in.

Garmin gpsmap60csx
This is the one that i have been looking at because it has really good reviews. Was it ready to go out of the box or did you have to buy additional software to use it for trails.

You can use it straight out of the box but it is limited on info. All it has are the major roads and towns. You can find a package with either topo or city navigator in it as the additional software to use. I run a nuvi 250W on the road in my truck and then utilize the 60 on the trails. I don't have topo simply because I never have seen the need to purchase it. The info obtained by the 60 will transfer to your home computer via the mapsource software that you can download from Garmin. Then you can plan you next trip on the computer and d/l it to your 60.

So you are running yours for the trails without any additional software? I mainly want it for the trails, so i dont have to get any topo software and can get the city software for better highway use.

I have used it with the tracking feature on to make a map of the areas I run and then save them to my computer in the garmin database. I reload the areas I need whenI go back to that area.
