I don't know if the two items are related, but the sign appeared after an ATV drove off the hill side about two weeks ago. Alcohol was involved.

The guy I'm talking about got pretty screwed up. They had to send rescue squads and stat flight in to get him. I don't really have any other information.

Emergency workers from a number of agencies spent the night rescuing the victim of a four-wheeler accident on Aetna Mountain, Chattanooga Fire Department spokesman Bruce Garner said Saturday.
The 24-year-old man, whose name has not been released, apparently went over an embankment and slid 100 feet or more down a steep slope late Friday, Mr. Garner said in a news release.
He said the Chattanooga Fire Department was notified of the incident just before midnight. According to the release, it was unclear whose jurisdiction this incident was in so several agencies participated, including Chattanooga-Hamilton County Rescue's Cave-Cliff Team.
Rescue workers used their own four-wheelers and a four-wheel-drive truck to get to the victim. The team called for Erlanger's LifeForce helicopter, but the terrain was too steep for a landing, Mr. Garner said.
The injured man was brought up the slope, and a Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency officer took him down the mountain to a Hamilton County ambulance, Mr. Garner said
Here is more............. This atricle clearly states that man on ATV was NOT wearing a helmet and that ALCOHOL WAS INVOLVED.

A broken arm and a few cracked ribs are all the only injuries the ATV driver sustained after falling off a cliff on Aetna Mountain early Saturday morning. Channel 3 talked with two members of the Cave and Cliff Rescue Team that responded to the crash about the mission.
The group the 24-year-old man was driving with say they looked back and he was gone, down a 100 foot drop. The fact that he is alive and didn't sustain more injuries is remarkable, especially since he wasn't wearing a helmet.
"He went a total of hundred feet," said Captain Bob Lewis with the Cave and Cliff Team. "We had to take multiple drops to get down to him."
The rescue mission that ended up involving 7 local agencies. "We got the patient off the bottom and then brought him over the edge."
Mike Hills has been a part of the Cave and Cliff Rescue Team for the last 5 years, he was one of the many who helped save the ATV driver's life.
"As different teams do their jobs, others are preparing for the next one," Hills said. "That's when I had down time to snap some pictures."
In fact Hills documented the rescue mission pretty well with his I-Phone. Hills Supervisor, Bob Lewis, was also on the call. He says getting the victim back up the cliff was just the beginning.
"We were forced to keep the patient in the truck and drive all the way down a traitorous road," Lewis said.
In the end it was a success for everyone, but the two experienced rescuers know how different things could have been.
"The fact that his friends saw him go over the cliff and were able to get to him and then call for help was huge," Hills said. "Our emergency response units were able to response very quickly."
The Chattanooga Fire Department has not released the victim's name. Witnesses at the scene told rescuers that alcohol was a factor in the crash.

I'm not a fan of seeing any land close, but if the privately owned property is being developed or they choose to enforce people staying off, it is their choice. It is made easier by people doing this kind of stuff and getting hurt - the property owners COULD be held liable for injuries on their property.
I wouldn't want to deal with idiots either and would likely keep my lands private too if it kept me from getting sued due to THEIR stupidity.
That said, this activity is risky enough - just ask anybody who has rolled, flopped, barrel rolled, crashed, broken stuff, etc. Adding something that can affect your abilities is just asking for trouble. As a community we need to be above reproach and not give those would like to see our sport or hobby restricted ammo to use against us.
I thought Mt Aetna was public AND private
