View Full Version : Just trimmed my front fender flares into flatties

Wanted to be sure my new 35 MT Baja Claws wouldn't rub in the front.
Used a roto-cutter, then a die-grinder, then a die-grinder with cutting disc.
The disc was the best and cleanest tool; used on its side...the roto-cutter was scary...it wanted to jump around everywhere.

ah ... look at the pretty clean Jeep.
Looks like ya did a good job on the trimming.

Glad you noticed the 'clean job'....it took me about 45 minutes to do the flare-trimming....it took me about 3 hours to clean the Jeep.
I used a sheetrock trowel and scraped 2 inches of dirt out of the floor-board; then used a dustpan to remove the big pieces; then used a shop-vac to get the smaller parts. Then I used a high-pressure hose to washout everything; and had to use a towel to sop-up the floorboard puddles...then spent about 45 minutes armor-alling the dash and inside stuff. Then I put the top on, and spent another hour cleaning the outside.
When I went out after it was clean to 'enjoy the day' I ended up at True-Value and picked up some extra roto-drill bits; and figured I'd try the fender flattening...since the new tires might rub in the front; and I had wanted to go that route anyway.
I think everything worked out OK. Still would like to go to the custom tube-fenders in the future; once my weld-man feels his metal-fabbing expertise is ready for that job.

My next 'little project' will be to move the sidefender lights to the front grill under the headlights; and then cut straight that final little flair section. Then when my fab-man gets his welder ready to fab a tube around the fender frame; all I will have to do is saw the front of the metal fender off straight; and I'll be street legal and not have to worry about lights...just chuck the big front light.

Actually the 2nd picture shouldn't be in there...that is before I trimmed them. Not sure how I got it in there; but I can't delete it out now.
Oh well...I am now debating on whether to trim the rears; or just take them off altogether.
I have seen quite a few Jeeps without the rear flares...especially on alot of CJ5s.

When you finished did you have to go to 4-Low to drive out of the driveway through all the mud /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hee.gif
For the puddles in the floor board why not just fill the jeep with water, and where ever water stands drill a 1/2" or so hole in the floor. Thats what I did and it drains perfect now. I just come home from wheelin, cover my dash (radio) with a trash bag, put the CB in the center console and hose it out...ALL OF IT!! It cuts clean up inside to near notheing!

I thought all jeeps had drain holes built in them?????
They do but usually the factory ones are not enough to drain the whole tub, PLUS if you don't pull the plugs they won't drain. Additional holes are needed to completely drain the tub.
