Hi all you MJ experts! I need some help. A buddy of mine picked up the trans and t-case from an 87 MJ with the 2.5L and now he doesn't need it. My first question: Is this an AX-5 / NP 231 combo like I first suspected? Second: If not what is it? Third: If this is an AX-5, is it the same as the AX-5 used in 2.5L YJ's or does it need alteration to be used in a YJ?

Hi, Jeepinbc. Sorry, but I can't help ya, but we have a couple guys who probably can. One of them is on a cruise this week, though.
Welcome to ItsaJeep.

Weird, my post disappeared??
Yes, that's the same AX-5 and 231 in the Wrangler. Whether they share splines... is beyond me? I'd guess they did.

Well I found out that the T-case is an NP-207. The trans I am still quite sure its a AX-5. Is there a casting number on these tranny's anywhere? I can't see them using different spline counts either...the 2.5L didn't change over these years did it? Logic (if DC ever uses it) would suggest that if the engine never changed, then the AX-5 would be the same in all respects on every application it was used for. Hmmm, well I don't want to give DC the benefit of the doubt on that one yet, they have done some pretty squirrely things before! Thanks for your input guys.
