Well,

Went to use the winch on Sunday and could not get the darn lever for the clutch to move into the freespool mode. Did a search on the internet after we got home and found that others have had this problem and that it could be related to the internals rusting together due to water getting in through the seal by the lever.Considering that I have never had the Jeep in water deep enough to cover the winch and it is only 11 months old, I am a bit disappointed.I also just checked it before my last trip in March and it worked fine.

I talked to a Warn customer service person and it looks like the nearest service center is 298 miles away so I'll have to ship it at a cost of $60.00 !

Just thought I'd post this as some of you are running 9.5Ti's. It's interesting that the manual says to have the unit serviced if it gets submerged.

So much for "superior sealed"

I'll let you all know what they find.

Thanks for the heads up, David. So far, so good with my 9.5Ti. Guess mine was two years old in February, and I have never had a problem.

Tom,

I'm thinking since the roads are heavily salted in the winter this may have caused the problem. Although I don't drive the Jeep much in the winter and I do keep it clean.

Since it still spools out under power and winches in fine I may not send it out to get fixed till I return from TB at the end of the month .

Better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it.

I still think that even with that little issue that a Warn is the best on the market

I have to agree that Warn is probably the best. Most of the folks I wheel with run Warns and abuse them far more than me without any problems. My issue may be one of the few out there. Also having spent a quite a few minutes on the phone with the Warn customer service folks I can say that their customer service is second to none. They were willing to ship the parts to me to do a fix. But I just don't have the time to tear anything more apart so I'll ship it to a service center.

Warn's warranty is one year on electronics and lifetime on mechanical so I'm not to worried about them fixing it under warranty.

have you considered poping it open and taking a look for yourself?

I love my warn... granted its not the 9.5ti (don't need all that electronic crap) just a 9000 lb warn. It's easy to work on.

Mikea...When I got mine, ( used but free ) I had a burnt selenoid. Got parts from NAPA. Like you said, easy to work on.

Have any of you done additional sealing on any of your winches? If so, what did you do, where did you do it, and how?

When I add my winch (T-Max or Warn), I want to seal it up as Alabama gets plenty of rain.

I have not done any additional sealing to mine. I have cleaned and greased it before. Also added a hard wired cab mounted switch. I would suggest you learn how your winch operates just in case it fails. I wasn't paying attention winching myself out when the controll cord go hung and ripped wires out of the plug. Its almost impossible to get to the connector on a warn controller (really hard plastic) I had to open the controll pack and jumper the solenoid to pull myself out.

I was alone and miles from a main road. If I didn't understand how the winch worked I would have been hosed.

I'm probably going to pop it open and take a look tonight.
The Warn customer service rep mentioned that the 9.5ti is a bit harder to work on the their other winches. But I agree with you Mike that it is good to understand how things work so that you can fix them in the field.

If it's just rust I'll try to get it to free up then grease the heck out of it. Also, I think that I might also take a look at the seal on the clutch lever to see if there is any way to improve that.
