My 1988 Cherokee 4.0L is overheating..
Just put on a new water pump, thermostat, radiator, and checked all hoses and replaced most of them. At first, temperature was going almost to the red, then I turned it off before it actually overheatead. Now, the temp will get to 210 and won't go no higher, then the coolant reservoir starts steaming and gargling.. any ideas? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Have you done a flush? AFter replacing the pump, thermostat, radiator and checking the hoses, you might have a clog somewhere in the block.

Agreed, you basicly replaced the entire cooling system. What radiator did you use? What size thermastat? and under what circumstances does it overheat? Hopefully you used a GOOD 3core radiator, a lower thrmastat like a 160, and it overheats on the trails...if it is on the trails, try some hood vents, worked wonders on my XJ when i had it

Jason:

Didn't you have a problem with your other XJ when you changed the water pump? Didn't you get the wrong one? And didn't it rotate the wrong way? Am I dreaming all of this? Could that be what's going on now?

Isn't 210* the normal temp for the 4.0?

Is it possible that you still have air in the system and that is what is working its way out?

That is a possibility. 210 IS the operating temp of a 4.0 thats the point he was making, it is showing normal running temp, but still appears to be overheating. At least thats what I think he was saying.

Well. The clutch on the fan may be bad, going to replace the clutch fan tonight with a regular manual fan without a clutch. It does great going down the highway or low speed. When you idle for a length of time is when it starts overheating. I'll know more after tonight.
And yeah, the 4cyl engine in the other jeep, I had gotten the wrong waterpump. But theres only one for the 4.0L and water is flowing now. I'll post after tonight if the fan does or doesn't solve my problem.

Fred, would he be posting that he had overheating problem if he thought 210 was operating temp? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/36_12_6[1].gif

Well, I do know that 210 isn't overheating.. but, its going to the red part.
The fan was a manual fan, not a clutch, but it was spinning the wrong way (go figure). I've got a new fan on it, spinning the way its supposed to. still overheating.
I've given up.
Its at the shop, they'll fix it..

try a good radiator flush if you have not already. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

Brand new radiator, shouldn't have to do the flush.
Shop said the engine was idling too low, they adjusted the idle up a little bit and said it didn't overheat on them any more after that, so I'm going to pick it up in the morning and we'll see..
Also ordered my lower radiator support for my 1994, as soon as it gets in, jeeps going to the shop to check the frame horns and realign them if needed. Then, I'll start the process of repairing it..
