Am I seeing this correctly?
A cousin of my daughter just got a new JK, I hve not seen it. He says it is a Rubicon but it 2wd only.
I thought Rubicon was a package that meant READY FOR TRAILS + some
Could he have a 2wd JK, but not be a Rubi?
How trail worthy? He is looking to come to Stoney Lonesome this weekend. I have no idea if this is a good idea or not? Maybe he will be ok on easy trails?
Any thoughts?

Rubicons are ONLY available in 4WD. They do make the 2wd drive but is no more capable off road than your average pickup truck. If he takes it to a off road park I hope he is going to be prepared to be winched and pulled a lot!

Yes you can ONLY get a Rubicon in 4wd. The 2 door wranglers all have 4wd. The Unlimited Saharas and Xs are optional with 2wd but are actually rare.
There were a few dealerships selling Xs with Rubicon packages:mad:
One had one on ebay as and Wrangler Unlimited X Rubicon edition!!
The stealerships are putting rubi logos on anything they can to push the price up. Toss on a set of rubi wheels/tires, and a hood sticker, and most people cannot tell the diff.
Its a HUGE scam if you ask me, but I believe a legal one.

If they were planning on using it any offroad, why would they have bought a 2WD. They did know that is was 2WD i hope when they bought it. I honestly wouldn't think it would do very good at all. I have a unlimited X JK 4dr and if it was only 2WD i wouldn't even consider taking it on any trails. Plus 1st gear in 2WD isn't that low. If it is a manual shift they could easily wear out the clutch fast i would think. I could see them getting aggrevated really easy if it gets stuck easily not to mention the guys that have to keep winching them out. But its worth a try i guess. It's up to them.

The average person has no idea what a Rubicon is aside from the decal on the hood. Its possible a dealer put the decal on a 2wd model and sold it as a rubicon package. I find it hard to believe anyone would ever put a rubi decal on a 2wd Jeep. Thats just rediculous if you ask me.
My opinion, I would not take it off road if its truly a 2wd. There is really no benefit to driving a 2wd vehicle off road, even a jeep.

He is 16. he doesnt know anything about Jeeps, other than he wanted one. His parents know even less, they bought it for him.
My daughter has talked him into wanting to try some trails, he wants to get muddy. But i dont think he has any idea that 4wd makes that big of a difference. I know his parents dont.
term "city slickers" is an understatement!

call me an arse but i wouldnt let ride in the group...
Why would your daughter talk him into trying some trails with a 2wd?
I just hope they didn't pay Rubi prices for a 2wd X

Well, let's take a step back for a second. DOES THE JEEP SAY RUBICON ON THE HOOD OR NOT. AND IF IT DOES, DID THE DEALERSHIP SELL IT AS A RUBICON OR A RUBICON PACKAGE.
If they did i would be taking it back and chewing someones %&#. There is no way a dealership should sell a jeep as a rubicon if it does not have dana 44's and lockers on it. I could actually see a lawsuit there depending on the information. If they didn't then it really doesn't matter whether the sticker is on there or not. But it is pretty stupid to have a rubicon sticker on a 2wd. And any other jeep for that matter if it is not a rubicon. Just my opinion.
Then as already stated. He should probably stay off the trails. I could see the 2WD doing better on some easy dry trails then in any type of mud. You better have straps and or a winch because he will get stuck.

Simply look at the front wheels for a differential and driveshaft. Look on the console for locker switches. Look at the window sticker to see what it came with... Should not take a lot of effort to see what it has with it.

My daughter is 10. She is excited her cousin got a Jeep. And this is the only family member of my ex-husbands family she adores. He is 16. Between the 2 of them getting accurate information is tough. He has no clue, and she is still learning. She is well aware he needs 4wd. She got it stuck in her head it is a Rubicon, and when I talked to him,he had no idea. BUt thinks it is 2wd, because she couldnt find a lever to change it into 4wd- like in mine.
I just didnt realize there are Wranglers of any type that are 2wd. I just was curious if a 2wd Unlimited has any business being on a trail, BEFORE I take him in the woods. I think that has been made clear.
i will get more info this week and advise his parents if they bought a Jeep with a Rubicon sticker and paid Rubicon price but it is 2wd, they need to handle it. But considering I am the evil ex-wife of baby brother (yes they still call him that), I doubt they will listen. So that is not my problem. I think it is insane to spend that kind of money on a 16 yr old
If it is 2wd, I would never advise him to go to an offroad park and take on serious mud or rock.
Forgive my stupidity.
lol- nobody thinks you are stupid, we are just trying to make sure your friends, family, whoever- are not getting screwed by the stealership.

I can see this sort of thing happening to a lot of people who are really clueless about Jeeps and 4-wheel drives. Just with a 4-wheel drive and
2-wheel drive sitting in a parking lot beside each other it would be hard to tell the difference. I bet there have been quite a few traded in that were bought thinking they bought a 4-wheel drive.

I think the biggest question should be addressed by Chryfiatsler. Why make a 2WD Wrangler anyway, let them go buy something else, its insulting.

The 2wd Wrangler unlimited is about 4k cheaper. Putting the 4 door in more peoples price range.
Silly, but hey- what car companies have been doing things right lately?
