I am about to purchase a 77' CJ7 with the Jeeep 3-Speed. I am wondering if the T-4 and T-5 Transmissions will mate to the original inline-6, and also if I would have to move to a Dana20 or 30 transfer case or could I keep the transfer case that is currently mated to the three-speed. Many thanks for the help!

Hello

I don't think there are enough CJ guy or gals on this board to help you out. I would try www.4wd.com (http://www.4wd.com) forums.

I had a 77 model CJ7 (picture below) that I sold a couple of years ago when I bought my TJ. I had it for 11 years.

It had a 3-speed manual also, but it was powered by the AMC 304 V8, not the I-6.

It had the T-15 tranny with Dana 20 tcase.

I checked my CJ records; and it looks like for the 3speeds:
the Warner T14As were exclusive to the 72-75 I-6s,
the Tremec T-150s were exclusive to the 76-79 I-6s,
and
the Warner T15s were exclusive to the V8 options.

So based on that, it looks like a 77 3speed I-6 should have:
Tremeco T-150 tranny
Dana 20 tcase

(Not sure where you are getting the T4 and T5 from???)

The 80 and up CJ Models (5, 6, 7, 8) all had the Dana 300 tcases and dropped the 3speed tranny line.

Hope that helps.
