My 05 unlimited rubicon is gettin just what i thought it would MPG wise 16-20 .But maybe it is just me comming from the bigblock v-8s and high HP tourqey sb's and hotrods but i would like more pep outta my 6 gun .
What have the rest of you done as far as upgrades to your jeeps 6 in the name of MPG and Horsepower upgrades ??
I was thinking airbox upgrade and exhaust to start .
Since i will be keeping this jeep for an exteamly long time i do not wish to fail emmisions testing's in the future .
I did see this product called tubonator that goes inline between your airbox and intake .HYPE???
Last i do not wish to have my jeep sound like one of the numberous ricers , or imports w/ the folgers fart can /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif
So fess up on those tuning secrets /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hee.gif

Scooter:

If there were any simple ways to improve gas mileage and performance while maintaining acceptable emissions, I'm sure these things would be incorporated from the factory.

I think all these air boxes and throttle body spacers are just snake oil. Even if you believe their claims, most of them don't claim to do much.

A less restrictive air filter only helps the engine if the engine is not getting enough air to start with. Who says the 4.0 L is not getting all the air it needs with the stock air box and filter???

You have to be VERY careful about the low restriction air filters. Be sure you are NOT trading fine particle filtration efficiency for air flow that your engine really doesn't even need.

There have been reports of dust in the air tube at the throttle body on Jeeps with the K&N filters. That dust has made it through the filter!

If you get one, at least be sure to clean it and re-oil it often enough to keep it working at its peak.

Just the Old Tomster's two cents worth.

Oh, guess what the filter manufacturers and the filter paper suppliers use to test the dirt holding capacity and filtration efficiency of air filters and oil filters?

ARIZONA ROAD DUST!

Yep, it is screened and mixed so that the percentage of particles in the various micron sizes is uniform from jug to jug of the stuff, but it is actually Arizona road dust.

I work at a paper mill where we make automotive filter paper. We sell our paper to all of the big name filter manufacturers.

I'm the technical director for our mill, and I get involved in development work to improve existing grades of paper or to create new grades.

the only real good thing to do is get a supercharger, but they are about 3000 to 5000 dollars. you would increase HP to about 290 HP and ur torque would go up too. Stock u have about 190 HP, so it is a huge increase. But all the rest of the stuff is, like Tom said, snake oil.

guys i have to dissagree ,, i thing intakes and all that engine hop up stuff is great if you are trying to get better mpg. I have the aem cold air intake.. A complete system, it works wonders for power and mpg and i have not had any problems with fitration quailty. Now notice how i said intake system. Just a performance filter won;t do much. ITs the combination of a hi-flow filter, wider intake tuping with smooth bends, and a throtle body spacer to top it off to get real gains in hp. I soon will be stait piping my 4.0 via chopping off the muffler to really inhance the breathing capibilies of my 4.0 and realy bring out the higher rpm range,, while gaining a few mpg if driven less agressive.

Now i am also from the hotrod old too , that said i have never bought a KnN filter yet except for my dirtbike and that is cleaned every ride .
I have seen alotta guy say wow the KnN filter is the best yet they do not keep it clean .
I also know that AZ air is just about the dusty most dirty you can find even if your not offroad , that said i think a good quality paper is correct .
I did not get this nice rig to win drag races with and i know that .Maybe its just the hotrodder in me to make stock better .There is a guy here who has an unlimited rubicon w/ a viper v-10 w/ twin turbos , gee don't we wish we were all that rich /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hee.gif.
I heard that the stock exhaust manifold will crack eventually and leek , when that day comes i guess i will do the banks swap .
Thanks for your input .
I also saw by changing all your fluids to royal purple , there was less heat and more Hp gain .
Myself i tend to run the regular oils .
Funny thing about oil changes , one dealer said 5ooo miles , another said 3000 miles , here in our dusty trails i like 1,500 .This may sound like over kill , but like i said , i plan to keep my "great pumkin rubicon " for many years /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/animxj.gif

We demand that he registers and post tons of pics. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have been going through this same dilemma myself. I've heard Tom's side of the story, but I have also heard and seen pictures of people's intakes that are running K&N filters and filter systems that did NOT have the dust-past-the-filter problem. Granted... nobody from Arizona, but I do not ever plan to live over there. No offense, but it's just too far away from the area I'm accustomed to. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Would take a some serious money from a good job to get me over there!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tu.gif

I've heard throttle body spacers DO somewhat increase low end torque. Never used one, but my source is reliable. (twylie)

The exhaust manifold has been fixed, and has been since 2000 I believe.
