We had a flippin blast at our Jambo with color wars and such between the guides. Excellent group of spotters and recovery folks. We'll try to stay out of the way. First Pre-Jambo run we had 5 inches of rain the night before so we've had our "trail trial by fire!!" hehehe /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hee.gif

We've got all the guides we can handle, and some we can't handle. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif It's getting better with all the people at TB. The first year we couldn't even get through the trails for all the extra Jeeps that came out to see what we'uns were doing. At least at the Gateway to the Cumberlands J.J. we don't have that problem. It's all on private land. We have tried to get the Forest Service to close it for the 2 days, but with it being public access, they just couldn't do it. We have created a few good trails that we cleared, cut back, etc, but everyone seems to be running them now, and with the rule of " no new trails " it really gets crowded. With the numbers down, don't know how long LBL J.J. will last. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I really don't understand the thinking of the guys from Jeep Jamboree. I know that the Jamboree's are popular, but the people running them don't seem to be doing a lot to help their image with the locals who run the trails where these guys come once a year. I met a couple of guys several years ago at the Tellico Jeep Jamboree who were super nice guys. They approached the JJ officials about including me in their rides after I had helped them out with some parts on the trail after they had broken down. The JJ officials reply was that I could tag along unofficially at the end of the line, but if I broke down, they WOULD NOT stop to help me. This was after I had stopped to supply parts, tools and labor to make sure one of their own didn't spend the rest of the weekend looking for parts and working on their rig. Instead, they were only down for a couple of hours. These guys left the Jamboree and rode with my friends and I for the rest of the weekend, and have never attended another Jamboree. They have become regular trail buddies here at Tellico. I ride Tellico about twice a month and have been riding here for almost 30 years. I am not going to pay the unbelievable price that the JJ charges to ride in my own backyard. It would have been to their advantage to have me along, not only because I know the trails better than any of their trail guides do, but my lifelong best friends are the guys that are good to know when you come to Murphy to wheel. Timco Off road Recovery, Crawford's Camp and Farmer's Off Road Center have been personal friends for 20+ years. I know how to get in touch with them when no one else can. I have never left anyone stranded on the trail, even if I didn't know them. But according to the JJ officials and what was just posted here, unless you PAY to be a part of the group, you are just out of luck if you happen to get stuck or broken and the JJ passes by. I just thought that part of the "It's a Jeep" thing meant we Jeepers were a sort of brotherhood and not just a group out for the almighty dollar. Wouldn't the JJ officials be better served to include some well connected locals if for no other reason than to better serve the Jamboree crowd. I will keep on helping those on the trail, no matter who they are or what group they are with, I guess maybe I am just easily offended. Well, I have rambled too much, so I will quit now.

Kevin:

I can understand your feelings. You lived by the "Jeepers Code" and helped someone to get back in bidness and enjoy the rest of their weekend, but then you were told you could "tag along" at your own risk if YOU broke down.

Now, I have never been to a JJ, but I know a little bit about them from folks who have been and even from some of the trail guides. Try to look at this situation from the JJ side for just a minute.

There are a bunch of people who have paid a lot of money to participate in the Jambo. When they are out on the trails, they expect to keep moving. If word gets around that they are being held up because someone who is not part of the JJ is having trouble and is being assisted by JJ people, there would be a riot. Remember, many of these folks are off roading for the first time and have yet to learn or accept the "Code."

I'm not trying to take sides, Kevin, but I can understand the reasoning of the JJ folks. I can also see where you could be offended by their attitude, after you had just gone to so much trouble to help some of their customers.

That's the key word, Kevin, CUSTOMERS. Remember, those are not just a bunch of Jeepers out there having fun. The JJ officials see them as customers. The overall purpose behind the whole thing is to promote Jeeps for the purpose of Jeep SALES. I'm not being cynical, and I know that Jeep owners having fun is a goal of the Jambo too. I'm glad they have Jambo's, because that gets a lot of folks interested in off roading. But, the bottom line is that DC is promoting the sales of Jeeps. Nothing wrong with that in my book. We sure want DC to keep making Jeeps, so we all need to hope for good sales figures.

Still looking forward to getting down there to Tellico and hooking up with ya, Kevin. With all of your repair capabilities and with all of your local buds, I know I can feel comfortable about being taken care of in case of trouble.

Just so I am clear I am going to wheel with the usual group that shows up and to show some friends a good time. Not to be part of the JJ. I hope others can come be part of our fun weekend. Let me know if anyone is showing up and if you want to camp. I may be up early on Friday but will probably not do any wheeling that day as I will need to set up camp, etc.

Looking forward to it!

You are right Tom. It was late and I was tired. I know that it is a business to the Jeep Jamboree crew. They do perform a good service for the new Jeep crowd as well as the aftermarket 4x4 centers. A new Jeeper who enjoys himself/herself will spend quite a bit more on improvements to their stock rig than someone with a full blown competition rig will. I guess they figure that if their CUSTOMER gets too friendly with the locals, they might ride next time without the JJ crowd. I enjoy meeting people with the same love of the outdoors and a love of wheelin'. Most of these JJ folks are great people also. I just felt the need to get up on my soapbox and rant the other night. Sorry for bending everyone's ear, and sorry if I offended anyone.

Bottem line is its a touchy area. Believe me, I'm not one to not help out and I think tom and some others can back me up on that, but I would not even offer to help out anyone involved in JJ or any other paying event for liability reasons. Think about it, if you try to help someone out and they or someone else gets hurt and they sue JJ you can bet that JJ will counter sue you for your involvement. Thats just business. Nothing personal. And I would have thought for their own liability they should not have allowed you to help in any way.

thats my opinnion

I won't be camping, so you'll have to coordinate with those that plan to do it.

The fee is the same: $15.00 for a three day pass. Did you know that you can buy a pass good for a whole year for $60? You can come as often as you want to with the yearly pass and not have to pay anything per visit.

Well since I'm still somewhat disturbed by the comments, I will make it short and sweet.
1. JJ has been sued for " helping out ". Winch cable broke, which in turned broke childs leg of party to whom JJ stopped and helped. Sorry can't remember which Jam it was. Wasn't one local
2. It is a business, which means there is insurance to cover participants. NOT OTHERS!
3. And I hope others will attest to this. I will help in anyway. Here are the keys to my truck, use the trailer. I have plenty of spare parts, fluids, etc etc......I will help. ONLY AFTER I HAVE TAKEN MY RESPONSIBLE PARTIES BACK TO THE GENENRAL MEETING AREA!!! THESE PEOPLE ARE MY RESPONSIBILITY!
4. Jeep Jamborees are not really design for heavily modified Jeeps that can do all. Their intent is to take someone out and give them an overall experience to the Jeeping community. It takes more than just knowing the trails to provide a weekend that a new Jeeper and family will remember. I for one never downgrade anyones vehicle ( except for Tom's ) or anyone's ability to drive. I love newbies. Tom will answer that one I'm sure.
5. Jeep Jams are not for locals. Even though we do have some to sign up. You're right, why pay the price to play in your own backyard. But go to another Jamboree within a days drive and experience new trails, scenery, and hundreds of other enthusiasts that all have one thing in common. Jeeps and the love of them. Tom would always tell me, I'm not paying the price for riding TB. I wouldn't expect him too. But he is thinking about the Gateway to the Cumberlands now and he wont be dissapointed.
6. Don't get me wrong, it is a public place. I asked for the RESPECT of the trails, as we cruise along. And Tom....2 years ago, yes you were blocking the entrance at the first hill of Pirtle's trail. He was mad and had to go around to another hill. I think you stopped to take pics of all the Jeeps. No problem, I told him it was truly unintentional. Now with the advent of a trail system, they don't want you to deviate off the trail even a little bit. Bill Ryan rode with me again, last Saturday, and if he gets the signs done in time, we will start with the Jamboree trails to be marked first. All will be based on the Jeep Jamboree trail rating system.
7. Suz is right...let's go Jeeping and have fun. See ya on the trails.
