In my bid to get to TB without worrying about getting back, or even getting there, lol, I've been reading up on U-haul trailers. Someone said they have "surge" brakes. What are they and what is the difference between that and having your own trailer and a brake controller?
Thanks!
As you slow down, the trailer brakes sense this, and apply hydraulic pressure to the shoes.

Is it doable for a 1 or 2 time thing hauling an XJ? My trailer buying is in limbo right now.
It sure is Bill, they dont want to rent something that isnt safe.Just have to find out if they have one long enough for the Xj.
At one time, I was U-Haul's preferred customer as I was renting a truck or trailer from them on a very regular basis. Not cheap, it works. Depending upon the vehicle on the trailer, the wheel stops on the U-Haul trailer may be too far foward for your needs (too much tounge weight). The trailer uses wheel slings to hold the vehicle so if the vehicle on the trailer has tires that are bigger than about 31's, you will have to rig your own tie down system anyway. The first time you rent a trailer, just get it a little early and plan on having to experiment with designing a tie down system that works for you. Also, the other thing is, at least in my area, locating a trailer is hard to do, so I called the 800 # and reserved one a week in advance.
U-Haul likes to use industry standard trailer wiring connectors in a non standard manner..... this causes you to have to rent the little wiring harness from them for a few dollars extra. Not a big deal if you are only renting a trailer from them a couple times a year. However, I was doing that per month, so I made my own jumper harness.
