Okay, guys and gals, it is almost that time of year for the top to go down and the doors to come off. What do you guys / gals recommend that I do about mirror relocation? Do I purchase the brackets? Use some of the tricks I hear about using spot mirrors? If so, anyone have such a setup that actually works? Photos? So I just remove the doors and not worry about mirrors until Johnny law stops me? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dance.gif

I just do without side view mirrors.

Not sure what the KY law says about mirrors, and when I called the state police post, they didn't know either. At least the guy I talked to didn't know, and he said he would never stop anyone for no mirrors. He told me not to worry about it.

I am getting Harley Davidson long stem mirrors. They fit perfectly in the top door hinge, and they only cost about 30 bucks and look really cool.

Illinois law calls for one mirror capable of rearward view for 200ft.

Having said that I will probably spend the $25.00 and buy mirror relocation brackets.

California law is pretty strict on that sort of thing too. I'll end up getting the brackets IF I remove the doors. With the wider tires and backspacing of my wheels, every bit of water/dirt/rocks will get thrown in my face if I remove the doors. Time for some Bushwacker fender flares first.

I take everything off the Jeep in May and unless there is a horrendous rain storm, it doesn't go back on till September.

Same here Suzjeep... come May the top is off and stays that way until Sept or Oct.

This year I think I'll get around to taking the doors off. In previous years I've had the half steel doors....same as being off in my mind.

High 60s here! Can't take the top off, but you better believe all my windows are down, and the rear window is up... I'm enjoying this as much as I can, just in case it gets cold again. It IS Michigan, after all... could snow tomorrow! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Don,

If you go with relocation brackets, I think you might like the type skid row makes. They fit on the side of the windshield hinge. Uses your stock mirror. I saw these at our local Jeep show last year.

I have used the steel horse brackets on mine. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif The powder coating isn't all that great and in a couple of weeks they looked like junk.

PA requires at least one mirror on the driver side. I prefer to have both for pulling my utility trailer.

my $.02...

Yep, it's gettin' a little warmer here and thinkin' the same thing... doors off and topless.

Well.... guys/gals.... I had the doors off and it didn't take me long to remember why I decided to purchase the relocation brackets last year... then over the Winter, I forgot why I made this decision. Tonight I went driving around without doors and not having side mirrors when you are use to using them is a REAL PITA... esp. when changing lanes and just driving around town. The brackets that I am looking at, simply relocate the factory mirrors. How much of a PITA is it to remove the torx bolts around the windsheild as they have never been out since 1998.

Paul E
03-31-2005, 07:49 AM
Don, that will be your biggest challenge for installing. Use LOTS of PB Blaster BEFORE you start. There are tricks of heating up the bolt a bit, but if you use STRONG Torx bits (ie Craftsman), and keep it VERY straight when doing it, it should not be a problem. A breaker bar should help.

Don
03-31-2005, 08:44 AM
Paul, Let's assume that I successfully relocate my factory mirrors. Will there be a need to move them back to the factory location when I put the doors back on, or will I be able to use mirrors in new location both with and without the doors? If possible, I would just as soon make the relocation permanent. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tu.gif

Paul E
03-31-2005, 11:25 AM
You can make them permanent if you want. But every time you open your doors, they can hit the mirror, knocking it out of alignment.

I DID leave my relocation brackets on permanently, but I did line the back of them with some extra Tough Stuff Gasket stuff I used on my rockers, just in case I want to take em off and not have the paint totally screwed up. They were on there at TB, but the mirrors were in their regular spots.

I noticed no one has commented about the fact that the relocation brackets make the passenger mirror almost useless. It sets it so far forward that you can barely see it out of it from the drivers seat. Now maybe different brackets do better or worse but thought you may want to keep this in mind just in case.

You just beat me to it by about 30 minutes. I can't see my passenger side mirror AT ALL when the door uppers are on. In fact, I can only see the outer half of the driver side mirror as well. With the uppers off, they work great.

Don
03-31-2005, 08:36 PM
Wow Guys,, thanks for the information about the passenger side mirror. I didn't know this. I have been giving some thought to going to auto parts house, or truck accessory store and looking for a mirror that I could attached to a bolt that will drop thru the upper hinge when door is removed. Has anyone tried this? Any suggestions, or comments? Once I build one for the drivers side, I could modify the design for use on the passenger side..... I think.

Here you go Don. I've looked at this before. It seems really easy and inexpensive. As of now I don't worry about the mirrors when I remove the doors, but if I decide to do something, this will probably be it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tu.gif

Joel & Gumby.... you guys are right on /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tu.gif This mirror setup is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Nice big mirrors that actually work. Bill.... I'll help you out here. I am at that age that I like my mirrors /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I looked at Gumby's idea and it is nice for the "Younger" group that can see out of a small mirror, but I like the bigger mirrors and I am too lazy to keep moving my factory mirrors as doors come and go. Therefore, I think this is the mirror setup for me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yeah I like that deal Don. I have the full metal doors and they have never been off. Even by the previous owner. Not a mark on the nuts that hold em on. I have never even taken my top all the way off. Just dropped it. I did wheel through a mud hole once with the windows out and have never done that since...LOL

I had one **** of a time removing the Torx bolt from my upper door hinge to install my Tuffy door locks. It ended up stripping (real easy to do so) and my jeep is only 2 years old. Ended up having to drill the rest of it out. One big PITA. I wish you luck.

Hipee, you don't have to remove the torx screws to remove the doors. Just remove the nuts (2 per door) at bottom side of hinge pin. The mirror relocation brackets would require me to remove the torx screws and I quickly figured out that would be a PITA, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/td.gif so I'll just use some universal mirrors like what is shown on the Web site that I posted. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tu.gif

Yeah. I was just referencing my Torx bolt removal to your post on having luck removing the ones on your windshield bracket. I had to remove one on the upper door bracket to install the Tuffy Security Door Locks for full steel doors.
