View Full Version : Hard top corner

Well, the old Tomster took a corner a little too sharply, and I caught the vent thing on my hard top corner on a tree. As the vent was ripped out, it tore the hard top, as you can see in this picture.
I asked Allan if he would take it home with him sometime after wheelin' when the top off season arrives and fix it for me. He does body work for a living. Allan said he would do that for me, but... are there any quick and easy fixes I could do myself? I don't have to have anything like a perfect job. If the torn places are not good and smooth after the repair, it's not a biggie. I'll just spray paint over the cracks. Have already used some Krylon Fusion on the hardtop when I got damage in Buttpucker Gulch on the other corner.
Allan (or anybody) is there a way for me to fix this myself?

duck tape ... quack, quack /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif From looking at photo it appears that you just need to fold the torn flap back in place? Hard to tell what happened from photo without a hardtop to compare photo to. Would super clue or something like that make a temp. repair?

Fiberglass glue. Hold it in place with duct tape until it dries /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
there is nothing wrong with camo duct tape

Take a sharp corner turing right so the other side matches. Then no one will know the difference

I feel your pain Tom. I pulled the vents up on my rear as well on one trip last year. But I must not have got into it as bad as you did b/c it popped back into place and didn't crack.

As much trail time as Thelma Jane has seen, and considering the places she had been through, like Buttpucker Gulch, the damage has been minimal.

Good news. A buddy at work said he would fix the hard top for me on one of his days off. (He works out in the plant, and those guys work 12 hr shifts, three days one week, four days the next week.)
He has built race cars that have fiberglass bodies, so the boy knows what he is doing.
I know he won't charge me much.
Also, called Quadratec and was gonna order a pair of factory style mirrors for $84.95 plus shipping. The Jeep dealer parts department wanted that much for just one mirror.
Well, it never hurts to ask, so I said something about buying just one mirror, and the guy said he could do that. I paid $49.95 plus shipping for the drivers side mirror instead of getting a pair.
The mirror came in today, and I put it on after work. Simple job with no complications. The bolts holding the base of the mirror to the door came out easily.

I got both TJ mirrors for $50 at the junk yard. They were in perfect condition ... unlike the rest of the vehicle ... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I know, it sucks doesnt it Mike, you get your jeep all nice and purdy, lifted and such, and then you get trail damage. I hate it, but oh well.
