are the axles in the yj the same in a tj? found some 4.10 gears on ebay and wondering if they would fit?
Josh, I can't answer your question. However, are you going to do the install yourself? Reason I ask, is my 4x4 shop will not install used gears. Besides. I think the labor cost is the big end of the deal anyway.
Most 4x4 shops will install used gears they just won't warrenty the work or gears. As far as I know a D35 is a D35 when it comes to gears. As for the D30 you have a High Pinion and a Low Pinion. so my answer to your question is also.....I DUNNO!!!

Well, this is what I found in my handy-dandy Quadratec catalog. The same ratio gear sets have different part numbers. Beyond that, I dunno either. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
i talked to a couple of guys at work that build race cars and they said if you install a used gear, or one that has been removed from the axle could hum, vibrate, or just make different noises, they said once a ring and pinion gear is bolted to a diff. don't change it or you could end up with different problems, unless strictly off road vehicle, i believe i will buy new gears when i'm ready to spend the money.

I would imagine that the wear pattern is the problem. The odds of getting the exact preload and backlash on those same gears (same "fit") once they are reinstalled would be extremely low.
That's just a pure guess, cause I sure ain't no "Gear Expert."
Can someone confirm or refute my theory on wear pattern, please?

Tom, makes sense to me. Each vehicle, esp. a Jeep, is slightly unique. So having a slightly different load on the gearing makes perfect sense to me!

Like I said, my local 4x4 shop WILL NOT install used gears, not even an item open for discussion with them.... so there has to be something to this discussion.

I'm sure there really IS a good reason. We were just speculating as to what that "good reason" might be.

My point exactly... I think you are on the "Right track".
I don't know anything, but your discussion seems valid to me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hee.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hee.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hee.gif

dana 30's in the YJ are reverse rotation where the TJ's are standard. They do have the same ring gear diameter but the axle shaft sizes are different.
