Especially related to removing the roll pin - is there room from the other side to get something in there to punch it out?
And is there enough room between the ring gear and the drive pin to remove the drive pin without pulling the carrier. Similiar to the Dana 35?

You guys practice up, because I'm next /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif.
My step father should be able to offer assistence. Also we can use his place to do the work if you guys want. He's got lots of tools. (He's a mechanic for a living.)

Hey Mike
Picking up locker Thursday night and going to Madison to put it in. I'll be getting a late start so I understand if you can't lend a hand. (Around 8:00 pm)

A guy in California put the locker in his AMC 20 and wrote:
I really like the Powertrax - no issues in the 2 or so years it's been in
there. Installation was a hassle however...My gear ratio is 4.56 and I
wasn't able to remove the cross shaft since the ring gear was in the way so
I had to pry the carrier assembly out and remove the ring gear to perform
the installation. I'm no sure if this will be necessary in your case
though. If it is, make sure you note where the shims go for the correct
reassembly. I also marked the rotational location of the ring gear on the
carrier. I would recommend new ring gear bolts and red Locktite. I believe
the bolts are 7/16" fine thread and the torque is in the 80 lb ft range but
you may want to consult a manual (Haynes or Chilton).
Enjoy your new locker!

hmmm . do you know what gearing you have?
The Dana 30 has the same problem of not enough room to pull the drive pin out without pulling the ring gear off. Not a major deal ... just have to put everything back in the way it came out.
I didn't replace the bolts on my ring gear when I put it back on. The diff hasn't exploded so I'm thinking that if the bolts are in good shape it may not be a necessity but something nice to do if you have them.

Checking my Jeep CJ Manuals, the 1982 AMC 20 model CJ came with either 2:73, 3:54, or 3:73 gearing.
I just got a post-back from a guy on JeepForum that says his AMC 20 is has 3.54 gearing and he didn't have to remove carrier; that his cross-pin fit through the teeth.
Therefore, based on that; you definately shouldn't have to remove the carrier/ring-gear for either 3:54 or 2:73 gears....not sure yet; though on 3:73. Hopefully still not; but not sure.
Will post the word on that if I hear anything.
I also did some queries on the web looking for any AMC 20 writeups of lunchbox locker installs; but haven't found any yet...but if you don't have to remove the carrier; it should be pretty straightforward....Mike is a pro on it; having done a front, and two rears...and if he is gonna help you; then you should be in good shape.
Too bad you are having to wait so late to start the job though...makes it tight if there are any problems.

Thanks Mike and Dave for helping me gather info on this install. It came with 2.73 from the factory. I work best under pressure. I'm ready to take it on.

If all goes well traveling from Cookeville to Madison (pickin up locker on the way), I 'll be starting at 7:30. Yesterday, I bought some diff. fluid, gasket, brake cleaner. Should have some gasket sealant in Madison

I may try to swing by then ... probably be a tad early since I'll roll thru about 6:30 but oh well .... maybe I'll stop in at lowes and ponder future projects before hand.....

Again probably too late to matter and I don't remember the model numbers but the rear pin on my 79 cj (373) came right out but the front diff didn't. Had to pull the ring gear off that one.

I'm running 4.10s and had to remove the ring gear from both the front (Dana 30) and the rear (Model 20). Great setup though, been in about three years now and no problems.

I've been doing some research on this and it is very different if you have the different gear ratios
