Hey Guys

I have my electric fan and relays that I am going to install to replace the belt driven one. What are your thoughts on the installation and wiring of the fan? I am thinking of wiring directly to the switched side of the key using the relay of course and an extra switch so it can be turned off when driving at highway speeds. Would it be better to install an in-hose thermostat and wire it in the circuit? If so where is the best place to get just that item? I wanted to throw this out and see what kind of sucess stories and "things" you would have done different the second time around. Of course, if your like me on some things, just as your about to finish something up and then you think of a better way to do. Don't it just bug you until you change it around!!!! This is what I'm trying to avoid! I want to get it right the first time, hopefully!

I originally tried one of the higher quality thermastat switches($70), and never could get it to keep a consistent setting, I would set it for a temp and it seemed to take more and more degrees before it would close, so I would reduce the temp setting and then it would run all the time. I went through that cycle a couple times and couldnt win so I then just put a manual switch(w LED) and relay on it. once you get in the habit of using the manual switch its really not that bad.

I've got the thru radiator temp sensor. I put it as close to the inlet as possible and where it sticks thru the other side I put a plastic cap on it. The cap keeps the probe from reading inlet air temps. My engine temp runs within 10 degrees.

I've got mine set up with one of those through the radiator designs as well. It took some tinkering to get it set just right though. That was three or four years ago and I haven't had to touch it since. I also have the fan hooked up with a three position switch. The left position is "on," the center position is "off" and the right position is "auto." I also put an indicator light in the dash to let me know when the fan is cycling on and off and another to let me know if I have the fan in the manual "on" mode. I wanted to be able to turn the fan "off" for water crossing, or any other situation where I might prefer to have the fan turned off.

Here...pick you up one of these or something very close and this will take out 90% of the guess work for you. The only thing else you will need is a relay and an override shutoff switch.

Thanks Andy for the link to the t'stat. Sounds like the most popular way to set one up is to use radiator sensor. Thanks guys!
