Hey All,
New to the site but not to Jeeps. Got my first CJ5 in high school almost 20 years ago. Now drive an '83 CJ7 Laredo with 152K miles as a daily driver. I've had it for over 13 years and it's mostly stock, except for the weber carb, wheels, and BFG 31x10.5s.

I'm in the Air Force and just moved to Montgomery, AL. Came across this site as I was looking for solutions to my current stalling problem. Maybe y'all can help.

My Jeep wants to stall every time I come to a stop. I knew this was a common problem with the stock Carter carbs, but thought the webers didn't have the same issue. Took it to a repair shop the other day and they said they adjusted it as much as they could, but it needed a new carburetor. They don't do full carb replacements and didn't charge me for the adjustment, so I don't have a reason to doubt what they are saying. However, I had the weber carb rebuilt a couple years ago after it had some stalling issues, but now they're back even worse than they were before. The weber carb only has about 50K miles total (only about 5K since the rebuild).

So I guess I have a couple questions for the forum:
- Should a weber carb go "bad" after only 50K miles and a recent rebuild and need replacement?
- Since there are multiple reasons for this stalling that can be particular to Jeeps, does anyone know of a good mechanic in the Montgomery (or surrounding) area that knows Jeeps and could solve this problem?

I'm not that mechanically inclined, nor do I have the time it would take me to try and take care of this myself (i.e. carb in disassembled state for several days) since I rely on the Jeep as my daily driver. Any help anyone can provide would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi, Falcon, and welcome to IAJ.

Sorry I can't help you with your carb problem, but somebody here probably can.

Welcome to IAJ

It almost seems like a different issue in the fuel delivery......or a vacuum line if it is that type of weber? Does it stall out at idle in the drive way?.....Try starter fluid spray small amounts around the lines that are around it?

Welcome to IAJ!

I quit dealing with carburetors years ago because they tend to cause trouble like this. It was actually one of the reasons I sold my old Harley last year. I had to rebuild the carb on that thing about once a year to keep it running right...but the rebuild kit was only about $25 and it only took me about 2 hours to do it. On a vehicle I always thought it was cheaper to just buy a new carb and not worry about it for a while.

My question right now would be, How positive are you that it is a carb problem and not a timing issue???

Creeper,
Not positive it's a carb issue, but seems that way since it will idle (although rough) sitting still and level. It primarily stalls out when coming to a stop. Also notice a difference in the idle if sitting on a decline or incline. It's much more prone to stalling and idles rougher when sitting on a decline.

Elven,
Haven't tried the starter fluid. Will pick some up tomorrow and try it.

Thanks!

spray the starting fluid around any and all vacuum lines will it is running, if the engine rpm increases you know that line needs replaced, also wouldnt hurt to run a can of seafoam thru it

Umm that might have nothing to do with it right now if you have had people attempt to tune it the best they can.........if there is a vacuum leak and that is messing it up.....then the attempt at tuning it might having it run rich or lean and the slightest incline or decline....I don't have a Jeep anymore buy my Toy motored Samurai has a Weber 32/36. I have it tuned pretty nice for climbing now not the best but if I drop my floats a bit I prob could run almost anywhere. Though I got mine cause switching to pane later one will be easier. Hope it is just that easy of an issue for ya and you can get it up and going 100%.

Sounds like a carb issue for sure, whether not adjusted properly or the float is not doing what it's supposed to. Since it is your daily driver (assuming that translates to your only vehicle) then the quickest way to fix it would be to buy a new (or rebuilt) carb and swap it out. I'm sure yours could be rebuilt but that would take you a day and maybe longer if there was something needing replacing once you got in there.
