View Full Version : d35
Think I'm gonna go w/a super 35, instead of axle swap. Only runnin 33's, and plan on runnin them for a while, and my rig is a 4holer. I have had my 35 geared for a while and don't wanna buy more 4:88's for a new rear, so I think this is the route I will take, ( even tho I have been against the s35 for a while). I may be puttin money into a weaker axle, but I guess I'll wait till I twist a 30 spline b4 I start havin regrets. Plus the kit comes w an arb. Any opinions welcome......

Sounds like a plan to me.
I don't think the 35's are as delicate as a lot of folks seem to think. Don't get me wrong, I am VERY glad that I ordered Thelma Jane with a 44, but most Jeeps I run with at Turkey Bay have 35s.
Only seen one snap, and it was on a Jeep running 35" tires and locked. Got into a hole in the bottom of Buttpucker Gulch where the tire could not turn, and the torque just snapped it. The driver was not going crazy on the gas or anything... it's just that the tire got into a position where it could not turn.
A lot of snapped Dana 35 axle shafts are purely due to driver ignorance, I'm sure.
With the regearing you have invested, like you said, why not try the Super 35 route?

I don't care much for the D35 but with your 4cyl it should last a little while.
I was thinkin the same thing as well. I am kinda rough with the skinny pedal as well /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif. Plus I should've been locked a while before now, just was held back by the weakness of the 35. Thanks for the input.

Matt, are you coming over next weekend for some Turkey Bay wheelin'? Also, when would be a good time for me to come over and go to Livingston with ya?
Tom
/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/woot.gifYES!!! Dont have to work this coming weekend, so I'll be leaving on Fri the 25 to head down there. Not sure what time, depends on if I work on Fri or not b/c I may not have to. Anyway, figure I'll stay in a motel on Fri night, wheel all day Saturday, unless u guys r goin on a different day, just lemme know. Prolly bring a ride along buddy, and hopefully I can get some other friends to bring their rigs down. I will be coming for sure tho. As far as Livingston, I'll have to schedule a day when I can get my buddy Troy to go with us, being as he knows the trails the best. Should not be a problem tho /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tu.gif Gettin excited bout comin to wheel down there, u may get to see me on my top, who knows, LOL. Where is the best place, (location wize) to stay?

Let me check and see if I can get you a good rate at the Ken Oak Resort Motel in Aurora. I need to know how many people and how many rooms and which night or nights. We have folks wanting to go Sunday, but I can go both Saturday and Sunday, so tell me which day you prefer or if you want to go both days. I'll need to know all of that in order to get you a price on rooms.

I have ridden with several guys running 35's with the super 35 kit. Most of these guys were very good friends with their rev limiters and no carnage, at least as far as the rear axle goes. One guy had a cherokee with 38's and the super 35. He ran schoolbus, guardrail and slickrock with no problems with the rear axle. He broke two warn hub conversions on the front and lost the right front wheel when the front axle u joint exploded taking out the kingpens, but the super 35 has definately been Tellico tested tuff.
I can go both days if we can get a couple other rigs to go, then I'm all for it. For now, I just need one room. If I end up gettin more guys to go, then I'll need more, I'll let u know. I'll prollt just bring one buddy to ride w me, that is unless I can get some more guys to go like I said. But we'll see if u and I can get some guys to go on saturday, and hopefully by the middle of the week we'll have this figured out.
Glad to hear the super 35 is pretty tough. I have heard that it is, and will prolly run no bigger than 36's, b4 going to a 60. Just don't wanna spend alot in btween. I am planning on getting some 33" Trxus MT's in a month or two, and will prolly upgrade the lift and gears for 36's when the 33's wear out. By the time they wear out, I'll be itching to upgrade to 36's any way.
Hey Tom:
Depending upon how many guys Matt wants to share living quarters with, Early American (Owned by same people as Kenoak) have 1970's style mobilehome in the rear that they rent out. Been a while, but it use to be a Good deal if there are 3 - 4 guys to share it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I had the D35 in my YJ and I was hard on the go pedal and I've never had any problems with it for the 5 years I owned it. Of course, I was only running 30" tires. I'm going to go with a Super35 setup myself - one day, when Uncle Sam releases control of my cash.
Hear that. One of my tax return presents to my self is a Tom Woods DS, and an AA SYE. Then super 35 w arb, then the Tera rear discs, and new Trxus's this summer if everything goes good /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/woot.gif. (GOOD, as in no trail breakage... yeah right.)
