Hey gang;

I'm sure I have told you all about my 16 year old Jeep Driving Daughter before.

http://a586.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/114/m_3b204692a2ac031f5d3e805d79bfdfb1.jpg

When we moved her to West Texas this spring from our old home in San Antonio we told her she could have a puppy...

She has her heart set on a:

Yorkie
Yorkie-poo
Pomeranian
Pom-a-poo

Do any of you guys have a hook up for me?

I need to find a female puppy in any of the above breeds?

Please help me find one and help me save some Money!!!

If it were up to me I'd be looking for a German Short-hair or a Blue Healer but its not going to be my Dog it's going to be hers; and that is what the Princess wants.

What is a Dad to do???

Did you not think that Puppy was cute?

I guess that is a good pup for a young lady. I personally would get her a 120lb vicious killer trained to kill boys on site.

That might not be a BAD IDEA; if you were a 17-19 year old boy would you go up and talk to my daughter with a full grown Doberman in the Passenger seat of the Liberty?

She sent me a text last night and told me she was in love with a 19 year old guy an Electrician named Joe she met at Six Flags over Texas yesterday.

She is off with her the MOJO Cheer squad at a Cheer Camp in Fort Worth.

BTW: she wants to name her new Puppy "MOJO"

What is to keep a dog like that from having her for a SNACK???

You soon learn it is your own Daughter that is the problem, not so much the guys she is "in love" with today.

She gets over guys like a Wal-Mart Parking lot Speed bump; I don't think she ever even puts it in 4WD.

IF you are going to get her a dog, who is going to train it? Having a dog be disciplined to ride shotgun in a car is not really very easy (and is questionably safe for the dog, especially in a hard braking, panic stop, or accident. It's very hard to train while driving. The dog needs to have a very calm temperament and not very skittish. Look at TSJAY's Ross Allen or Hank - two VERY calm (and bigger) dogs - that handle car riding easily. All those you listed have a breed history of being skittish dog. Anything with -a-poo in it is just asking for trouble. Poodles, especially smaller ones, are generally neurotic. All the dogs I've seen on IAJ that ride in the Jeeps are for the most part bigger, and the owner has devoted a lot of time to training that dog to be calm and handle riding in cars.

Honestly, your best bet for a dog would be something bigger or a mutt that doesn't have the (in)breeding. We have 2 Shih Tzu's who are surprisingly calm, but they are VERY stubborn (they fit in perfectly with my family :D).

Having a token dog in the arms is one thing. Having a dog she is willing to put the time in to training and training properly is something entirely different. Given that she is 16, doing cheerleading camps, I can only assume she is VERY active and probably not able to devote the time to raising and training a pup that she would need. So, ultimately, it would end up with you and Mrs. JeepTales to raise this pup.

Are YOU willing to put forth that effort?

I'd encourage her to wait until she has her own place in a few years. That way, it is HER stuff that gets pee'd on, chewed up, etc, so she can appreciate the full implications of NOT training a dog.

German Sheperd's are very polite and very loyal to their handler. You won't have to worry about your Daughter's safety and with training, the dog will be able to be taken almost anywhere your daughter goes. All dad needs to do is to train dog to growl anytime a boy gets within 5 foot of your daughter...... problem solved. :)

Paul E

Don, I think the issue here is that his daughter wants a token dog, ala Paris Hilton and other celebs-du-jour. No German Sheppard can be carried like a Dooney and Bourke purse.

I agree, though, that a bigger dog would be better suited as a companion, but bigger dogs also bring bigger issues - ones that I don't think an active 16 year old is ready to deal with quite yet.

I like German Sheperd's myself. But I learned something when I purchased home owner's insurance for my new home about 10 years ago. I have Farm Bureau insurance and I was asked if I had a dog. I said I have a German Sheperd mix. The agent asked what kind of mix. I said lab. The agent said that they did not cover German Sheperd breed dogs but did cover Lab breed and said that we should call my dog a Lab mix so he would be covered if he bit someone. Just something to think about. Good luck on your choice.

This is an underwriting issue. There is no "dog bite exclusion" in any insurance policy that I have ever seen. This doesn't mean that you wouldn't be non renewed after the first bite.

My leases for single family dwellings have a no pet clause. However, most have no "So what if" provision. Basically, as a landlord, I can say no dogs, but if you sneak a dog in, I either have to except it, or tell you to move. The way some landlords are solving this problem is by having a lease with dual rates (rent price). For example, $1,000 per month without pets. $1,500 per month with pets. Rent changes effective day pet comes on property. Enforceable lease, landlord doesn't get screwed. Insurance policies don't have this type of provision... at least not that I have ever seen.

This is a mix breed:

Mom is a pure breed Shih-Tzu Daddy is 1/2 Shih-Tzu 1/2 Poodle.

All I can tell you for sure is Allie is 100% Happy something that is not common for a 16 year old girl.

I don't think a new BMW would have thrilled her this much.

This morning she even got up a 6:30am and helped me do some wrenching... We put a new K&N cold air intake on her KJ!

She even agrees to write the Product Review on the K&N... What do you think of that???

You may have gotten great results with it, but I can guarantee you, with that K&N you ARE getting more dirt and junk into your intake and engine. Not really the best choice for an offroad vehicle. Now if she stays onroad, it isn't as big of an issue, but something to consider since San Antonio can be hot/dry.

For the most part; when we wheel we use the Rubi...

Not to sure she will ever wheel the libbie... I know she took it to the sand hill in Monahans, TX a few times but that is about it.

The trip to Petco:

She came home with Puppy Food; a Pink Pet Caddy, and a package of 50 of those house breaking tinkle pads.

So I only spent $45.00!

She dropped $80.00 of her own money on pet cloths a new leash and a few other ods and ends and some pet toys,.

Have any of you ever used this service and is it any good?

My siteser-in-law and my mother-in-law have both done this at different times. The consensus was that the obedience training works decent, but the housebreaking class was a waste of money.

With the obedience training, the hardest thing about it is for the home trainer(your daughter) to be consistent. If whe breaks away from the habits she is trying to instill, the dog will not know what to do. Just like with people, practice makes perfect.

I waqs trying to type the same as Terry. The potty training class isn't very helpful. All they do is tell you what to do and you do it, they don't actually work with the dog. The Puppy and advanced training classes are well worth the money. They will show you what to do but they do actually work with the dog and show you how to make your pet react to commands. Also, and probably more importantly, it gives the pet interaction with other people and other dogs helping it's social skills

I can save you some time. Get a dog crate. For the first 4-5 days if the dog is not being held and played with...it stays in the crate unless you take it out to go to the bathroom. When you go to get it out of the crate say the same thing everytime like "lets go out'' or "do you need to go potty". The dog will quickly learn that it needs to go outside to use the bathroom. Copper picked up on this in less than a week. He is now nearly a year old and he still wants to get in his crate every night to sleep. He is house broken and we dont make him get in the crate....it is his choice.

Also....when the dog does go to the bathroom outside.....give lots of praise. We did not do the treat thing as they will start wanting to go outside every 20min just to get a treat. The absoulte worst thing you can do is scold or punish the dog when it does have an accident in the house. Just put him back in the crate and then in a couple of hours....take him outside. It's really that simple...its not cruel...its trainning and the dogs are not suffering..the see the crate as a den and actaully feel safe and comfortable in there. A puppy may cry out at first but that is just natrual...lets face it...would you rather be in a crate or held by your daughter if you were a dog.

x2 on the crates. Deb has trained several dogs this way and this is how we did it for our Shih Tzu's Scarlet and TJ. They each have a crate. Greg, keep in mind, Shih Tzu's and Poodles are known for being VERY stubborn, so it may take a while and a lot of repeated work, but they WILL get it down.

When they come in for the night after being outside, they run to their crates. I swear they face plant into the back of the crates they run so fast! :D

Terry

Andy is correct. Everyone I know who has done it that way has been happy with the results.
The only things I would add are:
1.) Let them out for at least 10 minutes immediately following every meal. They will almost always go the bathroom shortly after they eat.
2.)I believe it is OK to mildly scold them for going in the house, because otherwise they don't have any way to know they are not supposed to go inside. I don't mean beating and scaring them half to death, I'm talking about saying "nooooo. Potty outside".

Not scolding apparently works too, as Andy has said.
It seems to have worked great for them.
I just think it helps speed it up a little if they have some indication that they're not supposed to go in the house.
Just my .02.
It's worked for me.
